Lancaster Mennonite's boys soccer team continues to have a season to remember. The Blazers received a letter of commendation by the Board of County Commissioners of Lancaster City. The honor was given to the team after LMH won its first state title in program history this past fall season.

Lady Barons' Manager, Olivia Stone, defies the odds everyday; inspiring a whole community.

The Manheim Central Girls Basketball team is fighting to win its playoff berth, and the Lady Barons have a special member to help in the campaign. She isn't on the roster, but anyone who goes to a Central home game spots her. Olivia Stone is the Lady Barons' manager. She not only offers water and towels to the girls, she also offers inspiration.

Stone born with a birth defect, but the nine year old does not let that define her. She is a student athlete who has speed, rhythm, and spirit. She not only won the MVP award at a summer basketball camp, but she is also training for a cheerleading national competition.

Ephrata Football Set to Hire New Coach

Eprhata School Board will vote to name Scott Shelley the new Ephrata football coach.

The campaign for a new football coach at Ephrata high school might be over. Today, Ephrata's Athletic Director, Tommy Long, confirming Ephrata grad. Scott Shelley is the new coach, pending a school board vote.

Shelley is an Ephrata grad and a former defensive coordinator under Phil Kauffman at Cocalico. He would replace Jim Vieland, who resigned at the end of last season.

The school board will vote on the matter on February 27.

Next season the Mounts will move down to Section 2.

Conestoga Valley Signing Day

Lammer Twins: Defying the Odds

Two Ephrata wrestlers battle the odds to hit the mats everyday.

Ephrata wrestlers, Chad and Mike Lammer are quite the double threat. Chad, a runner up in this year's Wrestling League Championships, while Mike leads his team in takedowns so far this season.

And they both do it overcoming challenges. Both brothers told they might never get to wrestle; Chad with a corneal transplant at the age of four, and Mike diagnosed with Type I diabetes at 11.

But as you can see these boys wrestle, and are pretty good at it. Take a look:

Jordan Page Named into USA U19 Squad

Former Cocalico field hockey star is named once again to the USA U-19 Squad.

Jordan Page continues to put Denver on the map. The former L-L League field hockey star has been picked for the United States Under 19 squad. Page will play for the USA in a series of games against the Canadian National Team the first week of April.

The college freshman currently practices her trade at Big East power, Syracuse University. Page helped her team grab the Big East title, finishing the season with the Orange grabbing five goals and four assists.

Lancaster Catholic receives a letter of commendation by the Board of the County Commissioners.

Seems like the awards never stop rolling in for the PIAA "AA" Football State Champion, Lancaster Catholic. The Crusaders today accepting a letter of commendation by the Board of County Commissioners of Lancaster County.

The team received a similar award in 2009 after their state title win that year. Click on the line below to hear reaction from both Adam and Bobby Depietro about the honor. An Exchange Student Dives Right into a New Culture

Foreign Exchange student, Katrin Goebel came to Ephrata for her senior year to immerse herself in American culture. And Goebel dived head first and joined the Ephrata swimming team to get the full experience.

Garden Spot wrestlers, Josh Bloom and Nick Cook representing their school when during the two day League Championships this past weekend.

Bloom pinning LaFever

Cook had one pin on his route to league gold, and took down reigning champ Conestoga Valley's Nate Musser in the semi-finals to win the precious 126 pound medal.

His fellow Spartan, Bloom pinned all that was in front of him on his way to the 285 pound title. He took down number 1 seed, Manheim Central's Aaron Lefever to win the championship, and his first tournament win.

Both guys helping their squad attain third place in the League Championships.

Athlete of the Week: Derrick Shields

Warwick's Shields leads the Warriors to second in the section.

Warwick's Derrick Shields helped his team win three of four games this past week, nabbing the honor of Athlete of the Week.

Shields scoring 17 points against Cedar Crest and then turning back around two nights later and scoring 19 points over Warriors' section rival Penn Manor- to help Warwick get sole possession of the second spot in Section 1. The senior captain averaged 19.5 points over that time period.

In 12 games, Shields averaged 15 points a game, scoring 180 points for the Warriors.

Warwick's Wenger Picked #1 in MLS Draft

KANSAS CITY (AP) — The Montreal Impact selected Duke forward Andrew Wenger with the first overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, choosing the most complete player available as the expansion franchise pieces together its first roster.

Wenger won the Hermann Trophy as the top NCAA player. He was the ACC defensive player of the year last season and offensive player of the year this past season, finishing with 17 goals and eight assists in 22 games.

“It’s an honor, but it’s exciting,” said Wenger, who plans to join the new MLS club in a couple weeks, once his responsibilities with the U.S. men’s national under-23 team are through.

The Impact were expected to choose between Wenger and Akron forward Darren Mattocks, who many believe has greater long-term potential. Club officials wavered between the two until a couple days ago, ultimately going with Wenger’s versatility over Mattocks’ scoring punch.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Wenger said. “I’ve never lived in a big city. I’ve been watching a lot of the Travel Channel lately, so at least I know of some nice places to eat.”

Montreal coach Jesse Marsch, a longtime MLS star, said he doesn’t know where Wenger will fit on the field. He’s shown ability at forward and midfield and as a lockdown defender.
“I think he was the best soccer player available,” Marsch said. “We followed him very closely, and we just felt he had the best future, short term and long term, in the draft.”

Children Derserve a Chance

A local foundation helps children tackle their school work head on.

The "Children Deserve a Chance" foundation is trying to make sure children have the opportunity to further their education by going to college. The organization helps 4th to 12th graders receive the necessary tools to understand the college application process and of course get the grades necessary.

Rheinheimer Nets 1,000th point

Lancaster Mennonite's Jess Rheinheimer nets her 1,000th career point for the Blazers.

LMH's Jess Rheimheimer wrote her name in Blazer program history after netting her 1,000th career point in Mennonite's win over Lebanon Catholic.

It was a tale of two halves for the forward. The senior sat on the bench for a good bit of the first half because of foul trouble, only scoring four points of the 15 needed to reach the milestone. And then the second half happened.

She scored 15 points in the second half, and with 5:15 left to go, she needed three points to reach the mark. Rheimheimer found the space behind the arc, and the rest is history. She ended the night with 19 points, giving her 1,004 in her career, and helping her team beat the Beavers 74-54, knocking Lebanon Catholic out of the top spot.

Rheinheimer is the sixth Lancaster Mennonite girls’ player to hit 1,000 points. L-L Leage E-News' Jeff Reinhart caught the moment on his trusty flip cam and to see the moment click here video of her 1,000th point.

Rheinheimer Scores her way to the Athlete of the Week Nod

Lancaster Mennonite's Jess Rheinheimer didn't quite reach her a thousand point mark this past week but it wasn't because she wasn't lighting up scoreboards.

The senior forward averaged 15 points in the last three games for the Blazers including that season high of 28 points against Lancaster Catholic. Rheinheimer then helped her team rebound quick from that Crusader loss, by getting the win over Columbia two days later - keeping the Blazers in the section race.

Rheinheimer still needs 15 points to reach that big milestone. And she will look to get her 1,000th career point against Northern Lebanon on Thursday.

Athlete of the Week: Bryan Rivera

Lancaster Catholic's Bryan Rivera continues to cement himself as one of the league's scoring leaders.

During the week of December 30th, Rivera reached the 100 point mark by helping his team arrive at a holiday tournament final.

Rivera helped the Crusaders beat Warwick in the Josh Monpetit Holiday Tourney with a 15 point performance.

In seven games, the senior has 107 points with 13 triples- which by the way is also among the leaders.

His game high so far this season is 28 points.

Athlete of the Week: Morgan Mummau

Manheim Central's Mummau continues her hot streak on the court.

Manheim Central's Morgan Mummau continues to shine for the Barons this season.

For the week of December 21, she helped her team get their fourth and fifth straight wins and helped the Barons snag the top spot in Section 3.

Just take a look a these stats. The senior lit up behind the arc in Central's win over Pequea Valley by drilling six treys and scoring a season high of 19 points. The forward then continued the charge and nailed two more triples in Manheim Central's win over Annville Cleona, leading the Barons as well as the L-L League with 14 triples.

To sum it up, Mummau had a great week on the hardwood!

Lancaster Catholic's Roman Clay gets the nod for "Athlete of the Week," after his performance on Saturday helped his team get its second PIAA state title in three years.

Clay steamrolled through the Tyrone defense rushing for 154 yards and 1 touchdown. The running back's performance gave him 1,899 yards and 32 touchdowns this season, which are both Lancaster Catholic single season school records.

The running back finished as the top rusher in the L-L.

And by the way, Roman Clay is just a junior.

Lancaster Catholic Wins State Crown

Lancaster Catholic beats Tyrone to win its second PIAA state title in three years.

Lancaster Catholic made it a clean sweep Saturday, adding the "AA" PIAA State title to its trophy case along with the District 3, and Section title the team won earlier in the year.

The Crusaders held off Tyrone to win 17-7. This is the second title in three years for the Crusaders, who made it 2 for 2 in state championship appearances.

Kyle Felpel Commits to University of Alabama

Cocalico's Kyle Felpel is headed to University of Alabama next fall.

He was named the defensive linebacker of the year this fall, and amazed us with quite a few amazing catches. But Kyle Felpel will be using his arms a little differently this season.

The throwing specialist will have to get used to the warmer climate, with the Eagles senior giving a verbal commitment to the University of Alabama.

Felpel had been linked to a couple other colleges, including Penn State and Oklahoma.

Last spring, Felpel won the district three triple A shot put title, and claimed silver in states.

The senior said he still hasn't picked an event to specialize in yet, and that he'll worry about that when he'll worry about that when he gets to Tuscaloosa.

The athlete of the week for the week of December 9th comes from the bowling lanes, with the Warwick bowling team having quite the week.

This week the team rolled to a 2-0 start for the season with wins over Manheim Township and Cedar Crest.

The girls then showed off a little in the Ice Breaker Tournament, where they beat 12 high school teams from Central Pennsylvania, Allentown and Philadelphia for the gold.

Lancaster Catholic is going to the state title game after its 23-20 win against West Philadelphia Catholic. The Crusaders will now face Tyrone in Hershey for the state title.

And the Crusaders had to dig deep for the win against the Burrs. The Crusader D stepping up after a Lancaster Catholic fumble, holding West Catholic to get back the ball after a botched punt. From there the offense took over, and in the same style Lancaster Catholic won in 2009 in Coatsville, Sean Titus brings in the winning touchdown with less than a minute on the clock.

Charles Sweigert Sparks Crusaders' Offense in Quarterfinals.

"Athlete of the Week" for the week of December 3rd is Lancaster Catholic's Charles Sweigert, after his performance against Mount Carmel in the PIAA quarterfinals.

Sweigert hauling in the TD

The game in Shamokin was all about nailing the big plays, with Mount Carmel keeping the Crusader offense more quiet than usual. So when the Crusaders offense needed a spark, Sweigert sprung into action. The wide out helped the Catholic offense in the second quarter, hauling in a 78 yard catch all the way to the end zone.

Sweigert finished the day with four catches for 157 yards.

Lions Club Awards Trio

The Lions Clubs of Columbia, Elizabethtown, and Lititz recognized three of the leagues most outstanding football players.

With one honoree from each L-L League Section, Garden Spot's John Armbrust,Wilson's Robbie Gillin, and Donegal's Johnnie Martin were the 2011 recipients of the Frantz-Rider-Yohe Award.

The Spartan earned the honor after working the option this season, throwing for 29 touchdowns and rushing for over 500 yards.

Armbrust was joined by his parents and coach Matt Zamperini while receiving the award.

Clay Running for First Down

Lancaster Catholic's Roman Clay and Brandon Hollister are the Athletes of the Week.

Lancaster Catholic is the definition on efficiency on the offensive side of the ball, and when you talk about the Crusader offense no one can forget about the two men leading the assault on the ground, Roman Clay and Brandon Hollister.

Both running backs combining for nearly 2,500 yards this season, and on Friday these two held their own against Wymoissing leading the Crusaders to their 6th district crown.

Hollister Running to Endzone

Clay rushed for 6 yards and a touchdown, while Hollister ran for 174 yards, including a 34 yard TD run, which would prove to be the winning score.

Coming into Friday's game Clay had 102 rushes for 1,328 yards, averaging 13 yards per carry, with 25 dances to the end zone. Hollister had 120 rushes for 1,134 yards, averaging 9. 5 yards per carry, and 11 touchdowns.

Catholic Wins 6th District AA Football Crown

Lancaster Catholic continues to write its names into history books. The Crusaders left their mark in Double A competition, winning their 6th crown over Wyomissing on Friday.

The Crusaders beat the Spartans 21-14, tying with Delone for the most district titles.

Garden Spot's John Armbrust signs to play baseball at East Stroudsburg University.

John Armbrust had a great season on the gridiron this fall for Garden Spot, but he will be devoting his future to his first love, baseball.

Armbrust will play ball at East Stroudsburg University, and he signed his intent in front of family and Garden Spot Baseball Head Coach , J D Stern on Wednesday.

Armbrust, a shortstop and a pitcher, was an All-State pick last spring, batting .522 and fielding .909.

Local Hockey Team Battles Off the Ice

Cocalico/Garden Spot Ice Hockey Team trying to keep the club alive.

No winter sports schedule would feel right without an ice hockey game, but for Cocalico and Garden Spot it's a battle to keep getting back on the ice.

The two high schools joining forces to create the "Spagels" after participation started to decrease. One of the reasons for the low turnout the last few seasons is plainly the cost. The equipment alone can run up the tab up to hundreds of dollars. The team tries to organize fund-raisers to help cut the cost.

LMH Soccer Wins First State Crown in History

Lancaster Mennonite wins first PIAA Boys Soccer title in program history.

L-M-H made history on Friday, winning its first state soccer title in history. The Blazers took down Tulpehocken for the second time this season, winning 2-1 with a pair of Caleb Cole goals.

With this win the Blazers are one for one in a state championship game. Mennonite add this latest addition to its District title the team won earlier in the season.

Lancaster Catholic's Bruce Harbach is the second L-L League coach this season to earn his 100th career win, when the Crusaders beat Boiling Springs 61-7 last Friday.

That places Harbach among a list of four active L-L coaches that reached 100 or more wins, which includes Manheim Central's Mike Williams.

The Crusaders' coach improved to 100-24 overall, winning 7 section titles, 3 district titles and 1 PIAA title during his career.

Warwick junior, Kiersten Cepeda, nabs Athlete of the Week after her team's push for state glory.

Warwick's Kiersten Cepeda is not the flashiest player, according to Coach Bob Derr; but she certainly gets the job done.

Cepeda after her goal against Whitehall

Cepda not a senior, but is certainly stepping up leading the attack. The junior Warrior is Warwick's leading scorer with 24 goals, and she netted two goals against Whitehall over the weekend to send her team to the quarterfinals.

"What she does is, she is at the right place at the right time," says Coach Derr, "Her knowledge of the game, her positioning and her stick and eye coordination really helps her. A lot of her goals are shots that go off wide and she just pushes it in."

Vieland Resigns from Ephrata Football

Head Coach Jim Vieland has resigned as Ephrata Football's head coach.

Ephrata football coach, Jim Vieland resigned from his head coaching position Wednesday morning.

According to Ephrata's Athletic Director, Tommy Long, Vieland gave his letter of resignation at the end of the season meeting.

Vieland took the position on March 2008, after leaving his assistant coach position at Hempfield. In four seasons, Vieland coached two years in section 1 and two years in section 2 compiling a 5-35 overall record as the Mounts' head coach, 1-13 in section play.

Ephrata is set to shift back down to Section 2 for the 2012-13 cycle.

Joe Paterno Era Over

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier fired over handling of rape allegations.

Penn State's legendary coach preached winning the right way, but now Joe Paterno ends his career at the helm of the program in the midst of scandals.

The university's board of trustees deciding Wednesday night to fire both Paterno and school president, Graham Spanier. This comes hours after Paterno made a statement saying he was going to retire at the end of the season, his 46th.

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley will serve as interim coach while Rodney Erickson will be the interim school president.

Paterno came under harsh criticism for not taking more action in 2002 after then-graduate assistant and current assistant coach Mike McQueary came to him and reported seeing former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky in the Penn State showers with a young boy.

Manheim Central's Bryant Myer proving special teams can be a huge tool to win games.

Manheim Central kicker Bryant Myer has been a weapon for the Barons this season. The senior was named the third best punter in the nation, and the 56th best kicker even before the season started.

Not only has Myer been great at field positioning, making sure other teams have to work on offense with his perfectly placed punts and kick offs, he has also racked up some points with so far this season, including a 43 yard field goal.

Garden Spot quarterback, John Armbrust, and wide out, Connor Schlegel continue to impress on the gridiron for the Spartans.

Armbrust has now thrown for 28 touchdowns, 18 of those heading Schlegel's way! Theses stats puts them up there with state records.

Three Mountaineers rack up Athlete of the Week honors after comeback win.

Jeremy Franck, Tim Murray, and Alex Pstrak all got the weekly nod after their part in the comeback on Friday. Ephrata down 35-13 at the end of the first half, to Cedar Crest scored 22 unanswered points in the third quarter to take its first win of the season.

Franck finished 11 for 13 for 173 yards and 3 TDs in the victory, while Murray rushed for over 160 yards on 15 carries, and Pstrak led the them in the pivotal third quarter, with two scores. The running back ended the night with 3 touchdowns and 150 yards rushing.

As seen on High School Game Night on Friday, here are the two short videos highlighting two players who are working hard for their team.

First up, Manheim Central's Caleb Walton is in charge of leading a very young Baron offense.Up to Week 8, the Central quarterback is 92 of 147 for 1,076 yards and 7 TDs. Walton though also working on the ground. rushing for 539 yards, 10 TDs and averages about 5 yards a carry.

Ephrata's Tim Murray is certainly one not shy of giving his all on the gridiron. The running back has done it all for the Mounts. Be it running, passing, receiving or defending Murray has stepped up for his team. The senior has rushed for 464 yards and 3 touchdowns, catching for 424 yards and 1 TD.

No doubt this season the Warwick football team has faced some adversity. The Warriors battled through injury after injury. Some players muscled through those injuries on Friday nights, while others adapted to new roles. The team really did prove its name every week, and one player asked to get out of his comfort zone was Brady Forney. We find out a little bit more about the wide out, who transforms every time he puts on a helmet.

The week of October 17 was certainly a great week for Warwick athletics, both the field hockey and the soccer team won league gold, and they did it by winning against some old rivals. So its no surprise that when it came down to choosing the "Athlete of the Week" this week, it was a tough decision, when I wanted just to nominate two whole teams. But two seniors have definitely stepped up this season for their respective teams.

Warwick field hockey's Emma Rissinger is definitely one to always step up in clutch situations for her team. In this past week alone, Rissinger not only scored the winning goal against Penn Manor in Championship game (she also scored that great goal against the Comets in the regular season), she is a threat from all areas on the field.

To the pitch where midfielder, Ryan Bertrando, also stepping up to the task. The Warrior fought hard in the battle against Hempfield for the league crown to win the fight in the middle third; and got the start his team needed against Conestoga Valley by netting a goal within the first couple of minutes of play.

Both teams won its first league crown after a significant drought.

Week 8: Boak goes Pound for Pound

Cocalico heading to Garden Spot Friday, for the section two game. The Spartans are trying to move on from last week's heart-breaker against Lampeter-Strasburg and look ahead to attaining the home field advantage in districts. The Eagles looking to continue on its winning streak. With a 2-2 section record, Cocalico has a chance to make some noise.

Our region has quite a number of high school teams representing the L-L next week!

In Triple A Soccer, Warwick and Conestoga Valley won home field advantage for their opening games, while Ephrata , Garden Spot, and Manheim Central will fight in the preliminary round.

10/12/11 Wiegand Sisters, Manheim Central Volleyball

Manheim Central has been killing it on the courts this year. And for two players you can say volleyball is in their blood. Renee and Lauree Wiegand are the last two of the Wiegand clan to hit the courts with older sister Rochelle, graduating from the Baron nation last year. These girls can run the show on the court, and as you'll see have a love of the game and for their family that has no equal.

CV's Anthony Brown becomes the L-L's leading rusher after his performance against Solanco.

Brown runs for 3 TDs against Solanco

Conestoga Valley running back, Anthony Brown takes the crown for "Athlete of the Week" after his week 6 performance against Solanco. During the game he rushed for 329 yards and score 3 TDs and becomes only the second L-L back to rush for a 300 yard game.

Brown has not only impressed during that game, but during the entire season. He retook the lead from Solanco's Joe Welk and is now once against the L-L's leading rusher after Friday's performance. The junior is just shy from the a 1000 yard mark, running for 975 yards with ten trips to the endzone.

Brown and the Bucks will be back in action this Friday against Manheim Central at home.

Manheim Central's Kaitlyn Gochenauer gets the nod for this week's athlete of the week honors. The Barons senior has had an impressive couple of games last week for Central.

Gochenauer gets the point against Cocalico

Against Solanco, Gochenauer led the attack with four aces, 13 kills, and 2 blocks. Then two days later got back in action and had another stellar night on the court with 10 kills and 3 blocks against E-Town.

These stats helped Manheim Central keep a lead over Garden Spot last week, and helped sealed their top spot for another week.

Roller Derby Team Tackles More than Opponents

The Dutchland Derby Rollers play for the love of the sport and for the community.

The Dutchland Derby Rollers is a local roller derby team based in Lancaster, hoping to increase the popularity in the sport while also helping the community.

The team ranks high in rankings, standing tall in 8th place in the East Coast, and 20th in the World.

Armbrust runs for 68 yards for a TD against CV

John Armbrust leads his Garden Spot team to the win in week four against Conestoga Valley.

The field conditions were sloppy for the Spartan's section opener against the Bucks, but the same can't be said for Armbrust. The home team ended with over 400 yards on offense, with the QB accounting for almost half.

Armbrust ran for one touchdown, threw for two more on the night, and accounted for 208 yards for the offense.

Before Friday night, he was 24 for 51 for 280 yards, with 8 touchdowns to his name.

Klahold celebrates after scoring goal against Hempfield

Warwick forward, Asher Klahold named the athlete of the week for his performance for the week of September 12.

In that week, the Warrior senior led his team to three consecutive victories with three assists and four goals.

In the game against Ephrata, Klahold had his hand in all the goals, and gave the crowd something to gasp at with some great ball control to leave defenders in his wake.

The Warriors scored 14 goals in that week alone and conceaded none.

Jordan Page Hits the Field Running for Syracuse

Former Cocalico field hockey player shines in the Big East.

Jordan Page is slowly making a name for herself in Syracuse. The former Cocalico field hockey player is at the Big East team for her freshman year and already has a goal to her name.

After making her first start for the Orange against Monmouth, Page got some more playing time against Rutgers, where she scored her first goal and earned a spot in the starting line-up.

Page recorded 66 goals and 72 assists during her career in Denver, including 26 goals and 26 assists her senior year.

Andrew Wenger was named to the Soccer America Team of the week after his performance against Clemson. In the match, Wenger recorded his first career hatrick and an assist in the team's 5-2 win.

This honor isn't the only accolade the former Warwick grad received this week, Wenger was also named the ACC player of the week and was voted to the TopDrawerSoccer.com team.

Before wearing the Blue Devil colors. Wenger won a state title with the Warriors and was named the National Player of the Year.

Duke will return to the pitch against rival Wake Forest this Friday.
