Athlete of the Week: Maddy Novak

The junior guard averaged 17.5 ppg in two Manheim Central wins.

Entering this season, after a Section 3 Title and appearance in states last year, Baron head coach Jason Coletti knew he had to replace his two leading scorers from that squad.

He also knew he had Maddy Novak with a year of starting experience coming back.

The junior guard and classmate Renee Wiegand have done the bulk of the scoring for the Barons this year. And Novak led the way in two Central wins last week.

She scored 17 points against Pequea Valley last Monday and 18 against Annville-Cleona on Wednesday.

So far this season Novak is averaging 12.5 points, 4 rebound and 2.5 steals per game. Central has played four of its first six games on the road and is a game back of Lampeter-Strasburg in the Section 3 standings.

Cocalico's Austin Hartman Named All-State

Record-setting fullback earns Second Team honors.

Austin Hartman received a well-earned honor this week, chosen for the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA All-State Second Team.

Hartman rushed for 1,947 yards this season and 28 touchdowns as the Eagles made it to the District 3 Championship Game.

The fullback leaves as Cocalico's all-time leader in rush yards (5,116), carries (699) and touchdowns (57). He amassed the second most career rush yards in Lancaster-Lebanon League history.

Lancaster Catholic offensive lineman Adam DePietro was named to the Class AA Second Team. The junior paved the way for a powerful offense. The Crusaders were a perfect 10-0 during the regular season before losing in the second round of Districts.

The L-L had seven All-State athletes this year. Columbia wide receiver Mike Burke IV made the Class A First Team. In Class AAAA Manheim Township's Quint Miller made the First Team as a punter while teammate Alex Vigilante was a Second Team offensive line selection. Wilson also had two players make All-State. Defensive back Connor Mathias was a First Team selection and linebacker Cody Simcox made the Second Team.

Giorgio, Pearsall Continue Success

Warwick grads making mark on collegiate wrestling world

After four years of success at the high school level, Antonio Giorgio's picked up where he left off at the University of North Carolina. Leaving behind a legacy that included three league and district titles, and a trio of state medals, Giorgio is the school's all-time career wins leader with 147.

Giorgio works out with brother Dante at Warwick

Giorgio quickly transitioned to the Division I level, starting at 184lb. for the Tar Heels, and competing with some of the best in the nation. The true freshman kicked off his career with a second place finish at the Hokie Open, defeating #10 Austin Trotman (Appalachian St.) in the effort.

Giorgio's currently ranked 32nd in the country, according to wrestlingreport.com.

Bryan Pearsall is a redshirt sophomore at Penn State University, wrestling at 133lb. and ranked 29th by the same DI rankings. Pearsall, a 2008 Warwick graduate, left as a two-time league and sectional champ, with 136 career wins (at the time, a new record).

Pearsall battles former teammate Ross Stockdale (Elizabethtown)

Pearsall's won his last three dual meet matches, including an upset over 10th ranked Ian Paddock (Ohio State) this past weekend. He's currently second on the Nittany Lion team with 6 falls.

Athlete of the Week: Chloe Hayter

Warwick senior leads way in 4 game stretch

Offensively, Chloe Hayter has carried the Lady Warrior team this season, averaging 14 points a game as the team's top forward. Standing 6'0, Hayter can find the hoop from outside the arc and inside the paint.

In four games last week, Hayter scorer 54 points, bringing her season total to 70 points in five games. On Saturday, she tallied a game and season high 20 points against Cumberland Valley.

Weachter Prepares for State Championship

Warwick-grad Jeff Weachter leads powerhouse Bishop McDevitt.

Calling Jeff Weachter's run as head coach at Bishop McDevitt a success is quite the understatement. The Warwick graduate (class of 1983) won the school's eighth District Title two weeks ago over Cocalico.

Tomorrow he takes aim at the program's second State Championship when the Crusaders face Allentown Central Catholic in the AAA title game.

Weachter has seen countless Crusaders receive Division 1 scholarships and has three players currently in the NFL: Philadelphia running back LeSean "Shady" McCoy, Detroit's Aaron Berry and Indianapolis Colt Jamie Thomas.

One of his current McDevitt stars, senior running back Jameel Poteat, is following in the footsteps of McCoy. Having already broken Shady's school record for career touchdowns, Poteat will attend the same college as McCoy, Pittsburg, next season. Note: No Mid-Penn school has ever won a AAA state title. In fact, District 3 schools are just 1-3 all-time in AAA state championships.

Cocalico's Jordan Page named 1st Team High School All-American.

Jordan Page: All-American

Jordan Page put the final touch on an illustrious career today. The Cocalico senior was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association High School All-American First Team.

In her final season as an Eagle she scored 26 goals and added 26 assists, leading Cocalico to the State Championship game.

In four years on varsity Page totaled 66 goals, 72 assists, three All-State selections, two All-Region teams and now one All-American honor. Page will play at Syracuse next year.

Donegal's Laura Gebhart, Page's teammate on the USA's U-17 team last spring, was also named a First Team All-American. Penn Manor's Renee Suter was a Second Team selection.

Athlete of the Week: Kevin Antol

Senior honored for second time in three weeks, this time on the hardwood.

Just three weeks ago Kevin Antol was named Athlete of the Week for touchdowns and interceptions. Today it's for buckets and an MVP award.

On Friday (just one week after playing in the District 3 AAA Football Championship) the senior started a new season in style. Antol dropped 21 points on Bloomsburg as Cocalico's basketball team won its season-opener in the Hamburg Tip Off Tournament 65-34.

The following night he scored ten points as the Eagles won the tournament with a 58-29 victory over Fleetwood. Antol was named tournament MVP.

The Eagles won Section 3 a year ago and were bumped up to Section 2 this season.

Page named to NFHCA All-Region Team

The season is over but the accolades keep rolling in for Cocalico's Jordan Page. On Monday the senior was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Mideast All-Region team.

Page posted 26 goals and 26 assists this season, leading the Eagles to the PIAA Championship Game. She will play at national powerhouse Syracuse next year.

Fellow L-L seniors Laura Gebhart of Donegal and Renee Suter of Penn Manor also made the team.

High school All-American teams will be announced Monday, December 13th.

Athlete of the Week: Austin Hartman

Senior fullback finishes career as Cocalico's all-time leading rusher.

Our final Athlete of the Week for the fall season is awarded to Austin Hartman not only for his effort in the District 3 AAA Championship Game, but for a season's and career's worth of accomplishments.

Hartman rushed for a game-high 132 yards and two touchdowns as Cocalico's (8-6) unlikely postseason run came to a 29-14 end against Bishop McDevitt.

Despite missing a couple games due to injury, the senior fullback rushed for 1,947 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2010, accounting for 44% of the Eagles' total offense.

Hartman finishes his career as Cocalico's all-time leader in rush yards (5,116), touchdowns (57) and carries (699). His career yards-per-carry average of 7.3 is seventh best.

Next year's Eagles will have to replace 21 seniors from the 2010 roster, with the biggest shoes to fill at fullback.

Watch Cocalico vs. Bishop McDevitt on a tape delay, 9pm Friday

Playing the role of underdogs for another week, 13 seed Cocalico aims for their 4th straight district playoff upset (4, 5, and 8 seeds), squaring off with No. 3 Bishop McDevitt.

The Eagles (8-5) are making their first appearance in the Triple-A District 3 title game since 1997 when they lost to league rival Manheim Central. A win would mark their first crown since 1994 (Class AA winners over Juniata). Coincidentally, Cocalico downed McDevitt in the '94 semis en route to the championship.

The Crusaders (11-2) are heavy favorites, winners of 9 straight games and loaded with Division I recruits. McDevitt dropped a double overtime decision in the 2009 Quad-A Championship to Cumberland Valley, 34-27.

Cocalico RB Austin Hartman is 16 yards shy of 5,000 for his career, already a school record. For the season, Hartman's amassed 1,815 yards on 263 carries this season, with 26 scores. His 55 career touchdowns are another Eagle program record. McDevitt RB Jameel Poteat has 8 rushing touchdowns in the Crusaders three playoff games to date.

Lions Club Honors L-L Trio

Thompson, Hartman, Snyder awarded Frantz-Rider-Yohe Award

The Lions Clubs of Columbia, Elizabethtown, and Lititz recognized three of the leagues most outstanding football players tonight, all excelling at the running back spot.

With one honoree from each L-L League Section, Warwick's Deron Thompson , Cocalico's Austin Hartman, and Ricky Snyder of Annville-Cleona were the 2010 recipients of the Frantz-Rider-Yohe Award.

All three earned Outstanding Offensive Back and Outstanding (Overall) Back of the Year for their respective sections, voted on by league coaches Wednesday night.

Thompson rushed for 2,135 yards on 331 carries in his senior season, plus 25 touchdowns. Snyder tallied 1,726 rushing yards on 13 scores for the 4-6 Little Dutchman. Hartman set school records for career touchdowns (55) and rushing yards (4,984), exceeding 1,800 yards with 26 scores this season (so far).
