Down on the Sidelines: Ephrata

New offense and new Section for the 2010 Mountaineers.

2009 Recap: After a winless 2008, Ephrata began 2009 with six straight losses but won two of four games down the stretch to finish 2-8 (2-5 in Section 2). That included a Week 10 34-24 victory over District-bound Conestoga Valley.

2010 Outlook: The Mounts will play with the big boys this season after a move to Section 1. Coach Jim Vieland will implement the triple-option offense this year in an attempt to play on the strengths and mask the weaknesses of this squad.

Key Player Lost: Ephrata has more than a half-dozen starters from last year's team playing college ball. Andrew Donnelly (California University of Pa.) was a Section 2 All-Star tight end and defensive end.

Key Returner: Junior quarterback Jeremy Franck took over for Lance Kopp midway through last season. But he must learn the ins and outs of a new offense that will require him to run the ball more and make good decisions.

Games on Cable-11: September 10 vs. Cocalico; October 8 at Warwick; October 29 vs. Cedar Crest.

Quotable: Franck and coach Jim Vieland discuss the move to Section 1...
